Virtual Tour of the Jews of New Orleans

Monday, November 29, 2021 25 Kislev 5782

7:00 PM - 9:00 PMRemote via Zoom

Join us on zoom for a virtual tour of the Jews of New Orleans!

We will meet at 7:00 to light the Hanukkah candles, then Julie Schwartz will take us on an unforgettable tour of a New Orleans most of us have never seen! On this virtual tour, we will travel back to the French colony of "La Nouvelle Orléans" established on the shores of the Mississippi River in 1718. You'll hear stories of the first Jews who sought out opportunities in this tiny backwater inhabited by French, Spanish, Germans, Native Americans and enslaved people brought from Africa.

Though Jews were initially "uninvited," by the time the territory became American, Jewish immigrants were began arriving who were determined to make New Orleans their home. As we will see, they wasted no time: immersing themselves in the local culture, music and architecture of the city we know and love today, and in the process, changing them forever. “The Big Easy” awaits!

** **Sazeracs, coffee and beignets only available on your actual visit.
